I can be an apparel snob. I shun certain fibers, I stay away from oversaturated brands (initials RL) and I’ve never bought a single piece of clothing from a shop-at-home-channel. Then I met FOF Marla Ginsburg and fell in love, not only with her personality and style, but also with the clothes and accessories she’s designing for HSN, under the label MarlaWynne. You read that right: HSN, as in Home Shopping Network!
I swear HSN isn’t paying me to write this. When Marla showed me her new collection a couple of weeks ago, I gushed over practically every piece, from her unstructured jackets and shirts with outstanding detailing to pants that fit just so and look like they came off the racks at Neiman Marcus. The prices are ridiculous. Think $89 for a top you’d wear to a night on the town.
A former TV executive who lived in Paris for 17 years (lucky girl!), Marla turned to clothing design because –like most of us—she couldn’t find anything that looked right on her FOF body, yet still had a distinctive look. Her versatile silhouettes cover just what we want covered (she calls them “icky bits”) and they’re modern, stylish and fabulously comfortable without being oversized and clown like. Her colors are definitely in!
I invite you to judge for yourself by tuning in to one of Marla’s shows on HSN, Wednesday, July 11 from 8 to 9 p.m. (EST) and Thursday, July 12, from 9-10AM (EST) and again from 6-7PM (EST), or just go online and shop till you drop.
In the meantime, I’m personally giving away two of Marla’s Convertible Belt/Necklaces to two lucky FOFs. (Sometimes designers offer us pieces for giveaways, but this one is coming straight from me to you. I bought them on hsn.com. That’s how excited I am about this brand!) Twenty-one smooth, big beads—in silver or brass tone—are strung on a sturdy cotton thread. The piece is about 70-inches long and looks smashing circling the waist or around the neck. It stops traffic every time I wear it. I even tell admirers it’s from HSN. That’s called Reverse Snobbery.
Just tell me which color you prefer and how you’d wear it to enter.
–Geri Brin

I love this necklace- I am a style snob- & don’t care where I shop- from Neiman Marcus- to the NYC Opera thrift shop (where I picked up 2 fur jackets)- to yes, HSN, & QVC. I never saw Marla’s show, so thanks tons for the info- I love the silver one. FOF’s like me have a muffin top- & belts just highlight my waist, so I never wear them. But as a necklace, it looks great.

On the other hand, i could think outside my usual fashion “box” and wear a tunic and flowing skirt and use it as a belt!

jane cartledge says:
I love the necklace! I would wear it with a loose fitting tunic in a textured fabric. I would not be able to restrain myself from telling the story behind how I got it. I always love to tell, “I got this for a song”..etc..My original intention for dressing avante guard would be to impress but then, I can’t resist telling about my “finds”. It is too much of a fun game to me, not to tell. Kind of takes the punch out of the dress to impress motive but, still worth it.

I like the gold tone and I would definitely use it for a belt. Most of my nice belts I purchased years ago when pants fit waists. Now my pants fit lower and I need bigger belts. This would be a perfect start…….a conversation piece.

It’s definitely a classic, bold, fun, & good for all ages- I really like it, and like at it can be worn as a belt a LOT!! I like both colors, but I think I’d prefer silver, assuming it will stay silver! (I hate to buy “costume” jewelry that discolors or chips/peels and is then unwearable…) I’ve been surprised by nice things on HSN & QVC in the past (mostly online), & have ordered from them; that’s where I discovered “PurpleLabNYC” makeup, the only makeup- at ANY price- that truly matches my skin tone.

Judith Marshall says:
On Geri, this necklace looks better as a belt. Why? Because Geri has a rather long face and the elongated necklace makes her face look longer (no offense, just being honest). Also if you’re unhappy with your neck you should stay away from statement necklaces that draw attention to it. Go for interesting belts, bracelets or earrings to draw the eye away from your neck.
Judith Marshall

Geri says:
Hi Judy,
Great observations. Or, I can have a neck job, which I am seriously considering.
