I will be attending my niece’s wedding in the spring. Just wondering what’s in style for an FOF who wants to look young, but not trendy!

well i will try and answer… Not sure if this is afternoon or evening.. and not sure of your body type. I an very much into sheath dresses this season and a fan acy cardigan over it… pastels are very in this year so that could be fun… Florals are very n as well and you woill find many dresses with great lovely floral patterns… or get a great floral shoe and purse… so fun!!!! Shoes are very comfy as well…. the new silhouette , well not really new, as you and i both know we wore them years ago haha, but love the kitten heel pump.. You can dance in them!!!! they also come with a 3 inch heel as well !!! If you want some quick ideas look at Valentino and bottega spring 2013 and you will see lace and cardigans etc. GOOD LUCK!!!! and HAVE FUN!!

Hi Linda! Here’s some more info: I’m 57, about 5’3″, 122-ish pounds. This is a late afternoon wedding and reception; probably 150 guests, maybe more. My biggest concern is my arms! Although I am petite, they are definitely showing my age! My legs are pretty good, so I’d like to wear a knee length dress. I have brown hair, brown eyes, fair skin. Any ideas would help! Thanks!

thank you so much for your response. It sounds like many FOF’s wish they were your size! What’s the problem??? A swingy skirt is a great way to emphasize good legs. It is very difficult to find dresses with sleeves. A modern way to cover up if need be is the “shrug” type of sweater. The issue is it needs to be in the same color as the dress or it will be too sporty for a cocktail look. If you are asking me for particular designers or where to shop, please let me know. that will give me more insight into your budget and real concerns.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful. If not, please don’t hesitate to

Hi Linda! After “shopping” on line for too long today, I looked in my closet and found a beautiful Evan Picone dress that I purchased last summer that I haven’t worn! It is basically a sheath or a straight design with almost cap sleeves. The background is black, and the print is very brightly colored almost tropical looking flowers. The print is not too big, but the colors are beautiful. I have a black shrug with elbow length sleeves. I also have some hardly worn black T-strap open toed heels (2 inches or so, so I can dance at the wedding!) So there’s the outfit, but I’d like to get a colorful clutch and jewelry. What do you think? It’s really pretty, and I am on a budget. Oh, it’s knee length, so my best asset will be shown! Although I will have to order some Tan Towels and lose at least 5 pounds to make it really look good!!! Let me know what you think!
      Thanks,
      Anne

sounds like problem solved to me! I think the colorful clutch is a great idea, as for the jewelry, not so much. Gold is always a good bet or pearls or crystal. Do lose those 5 lbs, fit is one of the most important aspects of looking good. Now that you have the clothes figured out, go to your local department store cosmetics counter and get some advice on make up…it will put your look over the top! I too a a fan of Tan Towels, they are the best…but a tip…if you have veins or marks on your legs, try nude color fishnet stockings. They disappear, go with everything and hide a multitude of sins. Go dance the night away you are going to look FOF

    Hi Wannbefof,

I recently attended by son’s wedding and wore this: http://stillblondeafteralltheseyears.com/2012/10/monroe-and-main-review-fit-for-you-guide-de-emphasize-the-bust/ (note the dress is simple, but in lovely rich fabirics and an up-to-date cut.) Emphasis for FOF should always be to err on the classic/classy side versus trendy.
Here’s a dress I wore to my niece’s wedding: http://stillblondeafteralltheseyears.com/2011/03/pink-brocade-wedding-luxury-outfits-modeled-by-women-over-45/ Note it’s a fun color and a classic sheath cut. If you opt for sleeveless make sure to have a wrap or a shrug unless you have arms like Michelle Obama!

So here is what I would suggest. You can go with something that has soft pretty color, spring is all about breaking out and feeling fresh and that means COLOR… Pick a color that you love and feels great on, my suggestions are a soft pink, peach, yellow or pale green , they are the colors of spring, feminine and pretty. A long flowing dress would be nice or a 2 piece soft tailored and unstructured suit, or a simple sheath dress. Fashion right now should feel easy and comfortable. Accessories is what makes any outfit, so put on a great fun necklace , dangly earrings , bracelets BUT not at the same time…keep it simple. Just ONE GREAT piece. Maybe a beautiful scarf that picks up the colors in the dress. Also you can kick it up with a great pair of pumps in a fun color, something that compliments, don’t go matchy ,match…mix it up… For example if you are wearing a pick dress maybe soft pale pump in a fun minty green . Remember , BE Creative and have fun, be playful and wear what feels good…When you feel good you look good !!! I hope this helps..Betsy Karp The Colour Coach at betsy@iadoreme.com

Look for the matte jersey knit tunic dresses – they are extremely comfortable and yet very sophisticated and updated. Some of the prints are great and perfect for a spring wedding!

Don’t know your body type, coloring nor the formality of the event but here goes. Polka dots are very much on trend so why not a pink silk crepe de chine polka dot dress paired with mint green heels (another very on trend color) Maybe a small silver clutch and silver earrings.
