It depends upon your lifestyle. The thing NOT to do is to eat a heavy meal and then go to bed shortly thereafter. Many diet gurus do suggest eating the main meal at midday and following with a light supper. The Diet Diva covered this extremely well but I will disagree to the extent that what you eat is at least as important as how many calories it contains. But that’s worth a book on its own.
I assume you are asking if it is best not to eat dinner after 6pm to avoid weight gain. This idea about when to eat or best times to eat are all myths about weight gain. What matters is how much you eat, not when! Your body is programmed to use food as fuel no matter what time of day you eat. If you have consumed enough food to accomplish this by 6pm than anything after that will be stored as fat. If however, you workout in the evening and donât get home to have dinner until after 6pm, you will need to eat later. What matters is how much you consume per day, not the time you do so. Calories in versus calories out is what drives weight gain or weight loss. This question and many more like it are answered in my book âDiet Myths Busted, Food Facts Not Nutrition Fiction.â I know you will enjoy reading it and it will clear up a lot of your confusion about what to eat and why.
