I live in NY and I feel Long Island wines are quite good. Paumonok Chardonnay is one of my faves. There is also a good NJ wine ….Laurita chardonnay I find is also very good. Have a happy!
Mirassou! I love everything about this brand – the price (around $10), the taste, and it’s very easy to find! Mirassous also makes the best Pinot Noir around, if you’d like to try a fruit-forward, smooth and mellow red.

If you can find one, J. Lohr makes wonderful chardonnays. Chateau St. Michel is also very good and consistent. If you can afford it, try introducing your MIL to a French reisling. Contrary to their German cousins, French reislings are crisp and flinty and are delicious served very cold. Another guru mentioned Montrachet – now that is one heavenly wine! Good luck.
The 2007 Cameron Hughes Lot 115 Russian River Chardonnay about $10 rated 90 pts is focused, stylished and good.
Another is the 2008 Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Chardonnay also rated 90 pts and about $10 is a true Californian Chard-fruity, balanced and expressive.
For something sweeter if that is her preference then the 2008 Rustenberg Stellennbosch Chardonnay at about $20 and rated 92 pts has a touch of residual sugar but the acidity gives it an excellent depth. After the 3rd glass some find it too sweet.

You mean really, really great? Go for the best. A Chassagne-Montrachet (white Burgundy). White Burgundy sets the standard for Chardonnay. But if she’s more New World in her tastes (basically anywhere but Europe), a big, oaky, buttery Chardonnay from California is the antithesis of Burgundy. Think Mer Soleil or Rombauer. My current favorite Chardonnay, however, is La Follette Chardonnay, made by Greg La Follette, the great winemaker for Tandem and Flowers wineries. Beautiful nose, beautiful balance, and tastes great!

Just wanted to let you know, I splurged for the Chassagne Montrachet! The excellent wine-seller at my local shop recommended one he likes. I have yet to hear from my mother in law whether she’s tried it, but she was impressed by the bottle 🙂 I’ll let you know when it receives rave reviews!

You can’t go wrong with Chateau St. Michelle Chardonnay..I believe it comes from Washington State. It’s more oaky and buttery than other chardonnays, so it’s extremely smooth. Usually price is at $12 or so. I love it!
