{Style Expert} A batcave for your batwings

It drives us batty — that flabby, saggy skin under our arms that seems to droop ever lower as we age. So we called on our style experts to help us find the solution. Here, they share their best “batwing-busters,” for hiding the jiggle while keeping cool.

Lovey Dash: “I love this new line called Babakul–especially their cardigans. They’re drapey in the front with a sweater-like binding in the back. They’re roomy, look great over tees, and come in four colors. When you wear it, no one will detect your batwings.”

Susan Hersh: “This season there has been a resurgence of blouses with bell, dolman or peasant sleeves. All are great to camouflage upper arm concerns.  The light blue Nanette Lepore shirt has feminine details that draw your focus to everything but the upper arms and silk fabric that floats off the body.  The Joie paisley printed soft cotton top has prints and pleats that also draws your eye away from the arm.”

Susan Grant: “I have Rick Owens scoop-necked, over-sized tees in multiple dark, neutrals and wear them over anything — either belted or tied low on the hips. It covers a multitude of flaws including flab on your upper arms, stomach or backside. And, it’s so light, it feels like you have nothing on.

Sandra Soich: “For summer, I have two battle plans for batwings. Plan one: I wear a brightly colored bustier or tank with built-in bra, and over it, I wear a sheer tee in a neutral color made from linen or bamboo. Plan two: I wear a classic white blouse with a sleeve that buttons at the elbow. This piece moves easily from day into evening (for the evening, I just add more accessories).

I have the perfect wardrobe solution for “flabby arms”. I am the designer of these pretty detachable sleeves that snap on easily to your bra strap. As a fashion show coordinator, women would express to me that as they age their arms can be a trouble spot & could not wear sleeveless clothing. That’s how the idea was born for sleeves 2 go. For only $25.00, you can transform any sleeveless garment with the detachable chiffon sleeves. Check out http://www.sleeves2go.com for available colors. It’s the perfect fashion fix-it for flabby arms.

Too true. I need to know some exercises to tone up the wings, instead of taking them into my batcave with me.

I agree with the ladies here. Too expensive, and too much fabric for me (I’m 5’2″ and I’d drown in many of these). I’ve made up this little example blog and twisted the arms of some of my friends and family that are mostly in their 50’s (with a few in their 80’s) to share clothes that they wear and that look good on their variety of bodies at http://www.over40fashions.com. You won’t find perfect figures on my blog…just normal women. But it helps give an idea of some of the clothes that we ARE wearing and why. And I’d love some submissions of clothing ideas/photos from women who’s sizes and shapes are not represented yet on the site so that we can see what clothes actually would look like on OUR bodies and our ages.

Too costly for me in this horrible economy!
But you could seek out look-alike retro fashions in your local thrift store.

the style of tops recommended by these women above can be found everywhere this summer, from WalMart to Victoria’sSecret catalogues to Macy’s and Nordstrom’s. when I look at VOGUE magazine I know I can’t afford the actual outfits; I look at the way the clothes are put together and then find something similar in the real world that I can afford. these style of tops are worn by all age groups, from 13 to 70? 80? above? my take is that these are just suggestions for “look and feel.” as far as “way too much material” the “peasant” look has been very popular this summer. the “sheer tshirt” can be a cotton slub material found at Walmart for $14. and that is about as form-fitting and little material as you can get for hiding upper arms.

These are neither in my closet nor my pocket book. Please you’re talking to real people here. I dress conservative, but this is way too much material, and the cost is absolutely prohibitive. Come FOF be friendly with those of us in the real world, the world that is dealing with the reality of this economy. 🙂

Okay so looking at these comments – you should all re-post with some cute and AFFORDABLE SOLUTIONS!!! I will go sleeveless for day activities but if I go out at night to the movies or dinner with friends (which I couldn’t afford to do in any of these outfits) I would like to feel pretty. the experts failed this one.

Even if I could afford it, I would not pay $352 for a top!
My solution was to make my own. I make custom soft furnishings for a living, so I decided to sew for myself in my spare time. I purchase most of my fabrics online and can buy designer fabrics at great prices.
Quite frankly, you could purchase your fabric and have a seamstress make you tops for way less than the prices shown here.
Or buy a sewing machine and serger, take classes, start a new hobby!
If I buy clothes, I find stores such as Banana Republic and J Jill pretty reasonable and stylish.
FOF, look at the posts, please remember to keep all FOF’s in mind. Most of us are trying to look FOF on a budget!

As a style consultant, I can recommend camoflauge techniques with the best of them (but only do so when requested by my clients). However, as a proud and confident Woman of Age, at 56 I have reached a point where I can go sleeveless and still feel GREAT about myself. I say, Let Your Freak Flags Fly, FOF’s of the world!

Come join the real world out here! We don’t pay $300+ for blouses in this economy! I actually liked the Hersh choices but why so much material? They look like smocks you’d wear if you were pregnant! We’re over 50 here and most of us have “been there, done that” pregnant thing! And those two over-sized tees at the top are not only ridiculously expensive but they are HUGE! Hiding saggy arms is one thing but I don’t want to hide my entire body! Stop getting Beverly Hills designers to recommend clothes on this site! Get somebody who knows clothes that real women in a real world in a real economy wear!
